So, You Want to Self-Publish Your Book …
When I decided to write a book, I knew immediately I wanted to self-publish, but even as I said those words “self-publish,” I have to admit I had no idea what that meant or how to even do it successfully. Many of you are likely in the same storm I was in, but there is hope: You can still walk on the water!
Because I was clueless I did what I do best: research. In months of reading several blogs, articles, discussion forums, and ebooks, I came across an article that has served me well.
Introducing David Carnoy of CNET! His article “Self-publishing a book: 25 things you need to know” keeps it real, practical, simple, and doable. Plus, David cares enough about the topic to make updates as he sees changes in the industry. He even has a companion article that is added to my reader list, “How to self-publish an ebook.”
As the saying goes, “Eat the meat. Leave the bones.” Not everything in this article will fit your personal situation or even be what you believe God is leading you to do. However, I know you will find information you can use.
Below I have pulled out nuggets that I love and will be using when I publish my ebook The Holy Ghost Writing Process: Getting Your Book From Your Head to Their Hands later this quarter.
Nugget 1: “… test the self-publishing waters with an e-book before moving on to hard copies.” My favorite PR coach and branding expert Pam Perry has said it is important to test the market. An ebook is an affordable way to do that.
Nugget 2: “Have a clear goal for your book.” Read my blog post “3 Book Writing Goals to Establish and Accomplish” to achieve this.
Nugget 3: “Buy your own ISBN — and create your own publishing house.” You may have noticed Exclamation Publishing is the name of my business. The reason is because I intend to publish under that name with my own ISBN. When you publish under a subsidy press, such as Lulu.com or iUniverse, the ISBN is registered to their company name. Why not have your own?
I know this article and other resources will answer your questions and bring you clarity. Have a blessed book writing experience!
Yours in book writing!
