Betcha Can’t Write Just One
Growing up my favorite potato chips were Lay’s. I remember the salty crunch and licking the crispy crumbs from my fingers … and yes, I fell for the slogan, “Betcha Can’t Eat Just One!”
The same rings true for book writing! Except there’s no risk of high blood pressure or unwanted calories …
Not too long after getting the idea for my first book, I started getting a second book idea, and a third, and a fourth … the ideas keep coming! And they should!
One of my clients who is currently writing her first book told me she got an idea for her next book, but instead of being excited, she sighed in frustration.
“What’s wrong?”
“I haven’t even finished the first book and I’m getting ideas for the second. Can’t I get this one finished first?”
I chuckled, “You will finish, and you will write more than one book! You can’t write just one.”
I completely understand wanting to finish something before starting another, but take a deep breath. This is great news! It means you are not going to be a one-hit book wonder, but you are going to establish credibility and change lives.
Think about how God is — He seems to enjoy multiplying things: oil, grain, bread, fish, people. Why not books by Christian authors!
We all respond to ideas in different ways. So here are some tips to gather those new ideas while you finish your current book project.
- Write the idea in a notepad, online note taker, or smart phone app
- Brainstorm and mindmap the idea with a writing coach, writing partner, or writer’s group
- Add in some additional writing time for your new idea–an extra 15 or 30 minutes
More than one book idea bouncing around in your head? You are on the right track!
I am here to tell you, “Oh yeah! You got some books in you!”
